The iron is the most important tool you’ll buy, and the right one removes most of the frustration beginners feel. Here’s how to choose without overspending.

Iron vs. station

A plain soldering iron plugs into the wall and heats to a fixed temperature. A soldering station adds a base unit with electronic temperature control and a display.

Wattage and temperature

Don’t confuse the two:

  • Wattage is how much power the iron can draw. More watts = faster heat recovery after each joint. For electronics, 40–60W is ideal.
  • Temperature is how hot the tip actually gets. A temperature-controlled iron lets you set this — typically 315–340°C (600–650°F) for leaded solder, a little higher for lead-free.

A 60W temperature-controlled iron is not more dangerous than a 30W one — it just recovers heat faster.

Corded or cordless?

Tips matter

The tip transfers heat to the joint, so its shape and condition are crucial:

  • Keep tips clean and tinned. A dull tip won’t transfer heat no matter how good the iron.
