Everyone makes mistakes, and the ability to undo a joint is just as important as making one. Desoldering lets you fix bridges, remove components, and salvage parts. Here are the two main methods and when to use each.

The two tools

  • Desoldering braid (solder wick) — a flat copper braid coated in flux. Heat it against a joint and it wicks the molten solder up by capillary action. Best for flat joints, solder bridges, and cleaning up pads.
  • Solder sucker (desoldering pump) — a spring-loaded vacuum that sucks up molten solder. Best for clearing solder out of through-holes so a component’s legs come free.

A temperature-controlled iron makes both far easier because you can keep the joint molten without overheating the board.

How to use desoldering braid

  1. Lay the braid flat over the joint or bridge.
  2. Press the hot iron tip down on top of the braid.
  3. As both heat up, the solder melts and wicks into the braid.
  4. Lift the braid and iron together (don’t let the braid cool stuck to the pad).
  5. Snip off the used, solder-filled section.

A dab of extra flux on the braid speeds up wicking noticeably.

How to use a solder sucker

  1. Prime (cock) the pump.
  2. Melt the joint with your iron until the solder is fully liquid.
  3. Quickly bring the pump nozzle to the molten solder and trigger it — it sucks the solder away.
  4. Repeat if needed, then clean any remainder with braid.

Removing a component

  • Two or few pins (resistors, capacitors): heat one joint and gently tease that leg out, then the other. For two-legged parts you can sometimes heat both alternately while rocking it free.
  • Many pins (ICs, headers): clear each hole with a sucker or braid until every leg is free, then lift the part. Never yank a part whose solder is still solid — you’ll tear pads.

Avoiding damage

  • Add fresh flux — old joints desolder much easier with new flux.
  • Don’t dwell. Long heat lifts pads and traces. Work in short bursts and let things cool.
  • Use enough heat, not too much — see the temperature guide.
  • Practice first. Desoldering is a skill of its own; a cheap practice board lets you remove and re-fit parts until it’s second nature.
