A spool of 0.8mm 60/40 tin-lead solder with rosin flux built into the core. Leaded 60/40 melts at a low, forgiving temperature and flows beautifully, making it the single best solder to learn the craft on.
The solder you learn on matters more than beginners realise. Leaded 60/40 with a rosin core melts low and flows easily, so your joints come out shiny instead of dull and lumpy. Practice with this first; once your technique is solid you can move to lead-free if you need it. Just wash your hands and keep the air moving.

Feed the solder into the joint rather than onto the iron tip — the joint should be hot enough to melt it. At 0.8 mm you rarely need more than a short feed for a through-hole joint, so watch how little it takes to form a smooth fillet. Wash your hands after a session and keep the spool away from food, as with any leaded solder.
Beginners learning on the most forgiving solder there is.
Extra flux and braid for cleanup, which makes even good solder behave better on stubborn joints.
